Principle Back
Magnetic particle test detects discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials by establishing magnetic filed in the material. Minute poles are set up at the discontinuities of the material in the path of magneti flux since these poles have a stronger attraction for the magnetic particles than the surrounding surface of the materials.

Application - Most weld discontinuities open to or near the surface. Back
  - Most suitable for cracks and other linear conditions.

Advantage - Relatively economical and expedient. Back
  - Test equipment is considered portable.
  - Unlike liquid penetrants, magnetic particle can detect some near surface discntinuities.
  - Can inspect through thin coatings.

Limitations - Applicable only to ferromagnetic materials. Back
  - Parts should be clean before and afer inspection.
  - Thick coatings may mask rejectable indications.
  - Some applications require parts to be demagnetised after inspection.
  - Magnetic particle test requires use of electrical energy for most applications.
  - Some potential for arc strikes on surfaces.
